Ingrown toenail help?

A few months ago I had surgery on my toe to remove half of my nail. Well my nail Is at 3/4 of fully growin back and I'm experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort when bumping my toe into something. Question I have Is what should I do with this issue? I can go back to the podriatic and pay 450 but I'd rather find a different solution to this. Any help? From those who have experienced this pain!!! Is removing the roots and having half a nail, the best option?
